September has a particular feeling to it. The light starts to change, the diary fills up again, and the relaxed rhythm of summer gives way to school runs, work and a wardrobe that suddenly has to be reliable rather than just easy. It is a natural moment to look at the lingerie drawer, because the pieces that carried you through July are rarely the ones that carry you through a busy autumn.
A back-to-routine refresh is not about buying everything new. It is about a short, honest audit, and then replacing the two or three things that are quietly letting you down.
Start with an honest audit
Take everything out of the drawer and be a little ruthless. Most drawers contain three kinds of bra: the ones you wear constantly, the ones you never reach for, and the ones you keep meaning to retire. The aim is to understand why each one falls where it does.
The bras you never wear are usually telling you something about fit or style. The ones you keep but shouldn’t are usually past their best. A band that fitted on the loosest hook a year ago and now sits on the tightest has lost its elasticity, and a band that has lost its elasticity has lost its support. That is your retire pile.
Rebuild the everyday core first
Autumn asks for bras that disappear under structured clothes: knitwear, shirts, tailoring, the layers you actually get dressed in for work and routine. That means smooth, moulded t-shirt styles in the shades that go under everything.
Two bras genuinely cover most of a working wardrobe: one in a neutral nude that vanishes under pale colours, and one in black. If you only refresh one category this season, make it this one. The Empreinte Cassiopee is a smooth full-cup we recommend constantly for exactly this, and for cups in the A to D range a Marie Jo moulded style does the same quiet work.
Then think about the layers
The second category worth attention is what sits under the season’s clothes beyond the basics. As jumpers and slip dresses come back, a seamless bra that does not show its edges under fine knitwear becomes genuinely useful. So does a slightly warmer loungewear set for the evenings that are starting to draw in.
You don't need to buy these all at once. But noticing the gap now means you are not scrambling for it in October.
Refresh the briefs quietly
Briefs are the easiest and most satisfying category to renew. They wear out faster than bras, and they are rarely expensive to replace, yet two or three new pairs change how the whole drawer feels. Keep a few smooth, seam-free pairs for under tailoring and trousers, and replace anything that has lost its shape or its colour.
A short checklist for the autumn refresh:
- Retire any band that now sits on its tightest hook.
- Keep one nude and one black smooth bra in your current size.
- Add a seamless style if knitwear is a big part of your autumn wardrobe.
- Replace two or three pairs of everyday briefs.
- Note any gaps now, rather than discovering them later.
